How to Keep a Mattress Fresh Between Cleans

You spend about a third of your life on your mattress, and it quietly collects the evidence: skin cells, sweat, dust mites and the dust that drifts in through Nairobi windows. A professional clean every six to twelve months resets it — these habits keep it fresh in between.

1. Air the bed every morning

Do not make the bed the moment you get up. Pull the covers back for 20 to 30 minutes so overnight moisture evaporates. A damp mattress is where mites and smells thrive.

2. Use a mattress protector

A washable protector is the cheapest mattress insurance there is. It stops sweat, spills and dead skin reaching the mattress itself. Wash it monthly with the bedding.

3. Vacuum the mattress monthly

When you change the sheets, run the vacuum's upholstery attachment over the whole surface, including the sides and seams where dust settles. Two minutes makes a real difference.

4. Give it sun when you can

Ultraviolet light and airflow are the oldest disinfectants there are. If you can get the mattress — or even just the bedding — into direct sun for a few hours, do it. Nairobi's sun is free and effective.

5. Rotate it regularly

Turn or rotate the mattress every three months (head-to-foot, and flip if yours is double-sided). It wears evenly and gets aired from both directions.

6. Treat spills immediately

Blot liquids immediately, use the least water possible, and let the spot dry fully before remaking the bed — moisture trapped inside is what creates that musty smell.

When home care is not enough

If the mattress smells musty despite airing, shows stains, triggers sneezing at night, or has simply never been cleaned, it is due for a deep extraction clean. Our mattress cleaning service cleans both sides, removes dust mites and debris, and leaves it deodorised — dry enough to sleep on the same evening.
