The difference between a stain that disappears and one that becomes part of the furniture is usually decided in the first five minutes. Here is how to handle the common ones.
First, the universal rules
Blot, never rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the fibres and spreads it wider. Press a clean white cloth or paper towel down and lift.
Work from the outside in. Cleaning from the edge towards the centre stops the stain spreading.
Test first. Any cleaner — even water — can mark some fabrics. Test on a hidden area at the back and let it dry.
Check the tag. A W code means water-based cleaners are fine; S means solvent only; WS either; X means vacuum only — call a professional.
Common stains, one by one
Tea and coffee: blot up the liquid, then dab with a mix of a few drops of dish soap in warm water. Rinse by dabbing with plain water and blot dry.
Mud: let it dry completely first — wet mud smears. Vacuum off the dry soil, then treat any remaining mark with the dish-soap solution.
Grease and food oil: sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch, wait 15 minutes to absorb the oil, vacuum, then dab with a tiny amount of dish soap solution.
Ink: dab — do not wipe — with isopropyl alcohol on a cotton ball, working in small sections. Ink spreads fast; if it is a large mark, stop and call us.
Pet accidents: blot, then use an enzyme cleaner if you have one — it breaks down the proteins that cause the smell. Plain soap leaves residue that pets can still smell.
Mistakes that make it worse
Using too much water soaks the cushion filling and can leave tide marks or mildew. Bleach and coloured cloths transfer dye. Hot water sets protein stains like milk and blood. And scrubbing velvet or linen flattens the pile permanently.
When to stop and call a professional
